NYSS - An Abortion of New York Sports Journalism

It's been slow this week. This is why a buddy and I have been going back and forth through email all day arguing about the most irreverent, pointless topic on earth. Who is in worse shape now and in the future, The Jets or the Dolphins. Here is the email trail. There may be a few hundred typos but nevertheless is readable.

NYsportsGUY:

Little known fact: The Jets pass defense is ranked number 1 in the nfl the last 6 weeks. Well known fact: the dolphins are the worst team in history.

Whiny Dolphins fan buddy:
Little known fact, pass defense is one of the most overrated football stats ever. Teams typically are "ranked" high vs the pass because teams just stuff the ball down their throats, much like everyone has with the Jets for the past decade and a half. One of these years they'll get around to tackling the running back before he gets 5 yards, just wouldn't count on it soon. Man-Genius. Please....

NYsportsGUY:
Whatever, jets are mediocre, ranked 20th in rush defense for the year. Im sure its been better the last 6 weeks though, no big deal. Im not saying there good but darrele is gonna be a perennial pro bowler for sure. He locked up randy moss all game, locked up braylon all game with the exception of one fluke pass and is a stud. The dolphins are a complete mess and have one good player who is overrated. anyway (Taylor)

Whiny Dolphins fan buddy:

Dolphins are in much better shape overal then the Jets. While I agree with you on Revis and Harris, the Dolphins are much better along the offensive line and in the backfield, which are 2 of the 3 components you need when building a championship team. Both teams have big ?'s at QB, and won't go anywhere til that is settled.

The last 3 teams that went 1-15 made the playoffs in two years, and Parcells is one of those guys who did it. The team already has two 2nd round picks, as well as the top pick in the draft. I'd much rather have a 1-15 or 2-14 year than a 6-10. If you're going to be bad, might as well net yourself a franchise player. We have nearly 30 million in cap room, and a one day pro bowl MLB in Channing Crowder. The defense does need an overhaul, which is where 4 first days picks come in. My bet is Parcells trades down to the 5-8 area, and picks up a 3rd 2nd round pick, and the team drafts 3 starters on the defensive side of the ball, to go with Crowder, Roderique Wright, Matt Roth, and our young safeties former first round pick Jason Allen who is finally emerging and Yeremiah Bell, who like most of our team spent the year on IR. While this is not something done overnight, Parcells will continue what Saban tried to do, which is make us big and fast. The key, obviously like the Jets, is QB. Gotta hit there or everything is won't matter.

Yea, certainly alot of overrated players win defensive player of the year on a 6-10 team. Easily the most underrated defensive player of our era. I know you don't see him play more than 3 times a year so you wouldn't know, but you're going to have to trust me on that, and not listen to Chris Carlin too much, as he also doesn't see much outside of his shitty Rutgers team, and the overrated Giants.

NYsportsGUY:

The Dolphins are in much better shape than the Jets? Wow I didn't know you were aloud to smoke during work. They are 1-15 and pathetic at that. There offensive line is better than the Jets that's about it and I would rather have Clemens over any of the Dolphins QB's. The dolphin's defensive line is just as bad as the Jets. In terms of running backs Ronnie is ok but chatman and booker are no better than practice squad Rb's. Leon and Thomas are both proven and if Leon was on a team with a good o line then he would be getting A Pete numbers

Channing Crowder is ok, but like I always say, the worst your team is the more tackles you will have because your D can't get off the field so they just keep tackling until they eventually give up a touchdown. Parcells is a talking head he doesn't know shit compared to some asshole we have never heard of. Parcells won a superbowl 25 years ago with LT great. Hasn't done shit since. Who says he can be a GM he's a dumb football coach. Jason Allens been getting beat all year I don't know how you can say he's good. Taylor is good but his skills are declining and it's not his fault he is overrated it's the media and the big 40 foot action figures do all of that shit. A good LT can hold him all game In pass rush and he doesn't do shit on run plays, but neither do most pass rushers.

I don't even know who Carlin is to be honest with you, sating he was overrated was my own thought.

Ill make any bet with you that says that Jets will have a better record than the fish next year.

Whiny Dolphins fan buddy:

First off, I never said anything about next year. Secondly, when did I say the Dolphins defensive line was good. Thirdly, if you saw even a glimpse of Ronnie Brown before his injury, you'd know the Thomas Jones and Leon Washington, while both are decent players, are not in Ronnie's league. He had turned into an all around back, was top ten in RECEIVING and leading the league in YPG. All this while teams stacked the line with 8 and even 9 man fronts because, and deservedly so, teams didn't respect their passing game.

He is slowly becoming one of the 3 or 4 best backs in the league, and if, big if, he comes back healthy, the Jets back do not come near him. Miami's front 7 needs a ton of work, and they need a shut down corner. When you could possibly have 4 picks in the first 48 selections, that goes a long way towards rebuilding a defense. Jason Allen didn't step on the field til about Week 11, and since has at least 5 picks, so I don't know where you get the "beat all over the field" business. He's only proving that Cam is struggling to recognize talent, among his many deficiency's.

Lastly, Parcells built the entire current Cowboys team, about 12-15 of them 7th round picks or undrafted by him. He had one of the shittiest franchises in the past 20 years in the Jets in the AFC Championship game in his 2nd year. He's an unbelievable drafter and has a track record.

To say you'd take Clemens over Miami's QB's is irrelevant. Just because he hasen't looked as bad as they have, doesn't mean he's the answer. He's been less than impressive and is far from convincing in terms of being an answer to anything. Beck likewise has been even less impressive than him (Clemens has had 2 training camps to learn and study), so it's impossible to evaluate them on an even level. Beck looked solid in his first 2 games for a rookie, then when shit hit the fan and the line forgot how to block, he got rattled and looked terrible. Far from a fair evaluation. I see us landing a veteran, and giving Beck a 2nd camp to evaluate to see how he's progressing.

Neither team is going anywhere without substantial improvement from their QB's.

NYsportsGUY:

Yeah bottom line is we both suck…for now

Whiny Dolphins fan buddy:

I'll drink to that...
