I have stayed away from the Plaxico Burress gun story even though it is right up in the NYSS wheel house. My thoughts on this matter are relatively tame and lacking strong opinion; or the exact opposite of my views on Aaron Heilman and the Mets bullpen.
The thing is that I don't put athletes on a pedestal. If they break laws then they should be punished the same way as
Cheddar Bob or any regular old douche should.
I have been to LQ, the club that Plaxico was at when this mess occurred. Not sure why you would need a gun there. I was there running around like a chicken with my head cut off and felt threatened not even the slightest. LQ is located in the midtown east area, hardly one of the toughest neighborhoods, and even though the people that go to LQ, or Latin Quarters, are typically from Queens, I would think that if someone goes there and behaves within the laws then the absolute worst that will happen is a fist fight.
Of course if I had to guess how someone who appears to be cocky, brash, and arrogant like Plaxico was acting, he was probably hitting on dude's girlfriends and walking around like his shit don't stink. Yes I am aware that he caught the game winning touchdown in the Super Bowl and he is of somewhat high importance in this city, but when it comes down to it, Raul will bust your face in if you habla to his chica, ese.
Some people will argue that high profile athletes are targets because of their fame and of course money. Just ask the Giants WR Steve Smith who
got robbed at gun point last week about that. This goes with what I said in the first sentence, the same rules and laws as everyone else. Go get a permit and stay within the same yellow lines as everyone else. Of course you can carry a loaded handgun in NYC regardless of what permits you have.
It is pretty obvious that Plaxico will never wear a Giants uniform again. My guess is that he will end up on the same team where all of the other whiners and law breakers go. The Cowboys of course.
