NYSS - An Abortion of New York Sports Journalism

Ever since my Pops was a young chap running around Times Square looking for nickel viewing booths, Baseball has dominated the New York papers back page. New York City has always been a town that epitomizes America's love for it's national pastime. The Yankees alone have captivated New York and the surrounding area with more championships than any other franchise in any sport. Although the Mets haven't had as much success as the Yankees, they clearly have a stronger fan base than the majority of MLB teams and I challenge anyone to show me a team with more blogs dedicated to them.

With all of this said and a lot more not said, not many would argue with the notion that New York is a baseball town. In fact, Mike Francesa would probably would belly flop and smother you if you even muttered the blasphemous phrase "New York is a football town". Well, come bring it fatty because I firmly believe that because of the reasons I am about to list, New York is now a Football town. The Jets and Giants have taken over.

They Have Had the Most Success Recently. This is my best argument. Right now the Jets and Giants are in 1st place while the Mets perpetually blow the division more than a friggen retarded mentally challenged 5th grader trying to do the math portion of the SAT's. The Yankees have missed the playoffs for the 1st time in a gazillion years and when they did make it recently, they faltered like Willis McGahee's knee. The Jets made the playoffs in 2006 and the Giants have made the Playoffs for the last 3 years and they also upset the supposed best team in history in the Super Bowl. Unless you have lived under a ginormous boulder since the summer, both the Jets and Giants are in first place and prospering. Oh yeah, you should also know that we have a black president and the economy in in the dumper.

Dominance Over The Division Rivals. You know what really grinds my gears? When my favorite team misses the playoffs and then that team's most hated rival reaches the ultimate pinnacle of success otherwise known as a championship. Well this has happened not once but twice in two years for New York baseball fans. You may remember this and then this and I felt like doing this each time. With the Jets, the Patriots have employed success recently until last year and it has only gone downhill since that historic, embarrassing, disgrace of a choke in the Super Bowl (never gets old). The Dolphins had the worst record in the NFL last year and haven't beat the Jets on a consistent basis since Marino wasn't winning Super Bowls. The Giants rivals have had about as much success as Mark Cuban has had dumping rotten stock shares. The Cowboys are full of hot air and no one on the Redskins bangs Jessica Simpson.

The Most Recognized Stars. There aren't many sports stars that get more attention and notoriety than Brett Favre. Every sports media outlet in the tri-state area was, and is, all over Favre's every move every waking hour. It's borderline torture, I'm not gonna lie. Then you have Eli and the rest of the Giants. The Manning name is a household name. From Oreo commercials to Citizens watches to having a famous family to magical super bowl runs, Eli's power in this city is only getting bigger with each win.

This is the toughest to try to make sense out of. Jeter and A-Rod are still very popular even though the Pinstripes haven't had much success as of late. Joba is getting more pull and endorsements recently too. The problem isn't with they Yanks it is with the Mets. As big as a fan as I am, David Wright is the only person on the Mets that would get mobbed walking and even that is questionable to assume. Pedro is likely gone so I am not counting him and Johan still doesn't have that recognizable look.

I am not saying that someone that doesn't know who these players are or that they couldn't pick Jose Reyes out of a lineup. Most people reading this are likely large sports fans and could identify a semi-popular player. Think about if you were a little kid right now and you wanted to meet one NY sports player, chances are that it would be a Jet or Giant.

Better, More Stable Coaching Staffs. Once upon the time the World Series featured two managers who epitomize New York. The Yankees had Joe Torre who couldn't get enough World Series Rings and Bobby Valentine would put on a fake mustache just to see his team to victory. Now we have Joe Girardi and Jerry Manual who I like don't get me wrong, but don't quit the bill like the aforementioned do. The Jets and Giants meanwhile have two coaches who have been around since 2004 and 2006, which in the NFL, makes Jerry Sloan look like Tim Floyd. How could you not like Tom Coughlin, he embodies what a football couch should be. He also made Eli Manning look like a superstar and won a Super Bowl without that d-bag Tiki. Eric Mangini was on the Soprano's, blew the whistle on the evil Belicheat, and has the team looking like it belongs deep in the playoffs.

The Football Teams Now Generate More Interest. This is arguable of course but the general consensus these days is that football is America's great diversion if not pastime. The advent of fantasy football has pushed the most casual fan to care if Tony Scheffler isn't starting this week and whether Robert Royal or Anthony Fasano should start in his place. They also care if Troy Polamanu scores a meaningless touchdown with less then 10 seconds left. Why? The same reason why that smokin girl with fake tits with that tubby, fugly guy, Money. But to put a New York spin on it, its a "what have you done for me lately" town and the Mets have ripped my heart out the last 3 years and the Yankee fan must not feel too great after snapping a 13 year consecutive playoff streak.

After reading this you probably think that I am football fan more than a baseball fan. This is actually not true. I happen to like baseball more and go to over 20 games a year while going to maybe 1 football game every two years. I live in the middle of NYC and although it is arguable, I would have to say that if football hasn't officially taken the town over, it could do it sooner than you may think.

Peeps were a quarter? Bargain!...to answer your question "Would you have written this last year?" No I wouldn't have of hence the title being "This is Why New York is Now a Football Town."

Jets didn't do much diving yesterday when we were dominating a 10-0 team on there home turf. But to your point, I'm sure we will find a way to blow it one way or another.

Peeps were a quarter. Aside from that I agree. Regular season pro football is like the playoffs in other sports, every week, with the intensity of the games and the fans. However, you suffer from the delusions of a Jets/Mets fan until the inevitable collapse when the rats leave the sinking ship and the annual excuses start. Would you have written this last year? Later this season when the Jets take a dive?

I really depends which teams are having success. I think Ny is a big sports town period. When the Yanks and Mets are doing well, everyone is excited. Thing about the Jets and Giants is they rarely are both doing well at the same time. With them both in first its got everyone in Ny excited. When the Knicks are doing well everyone is talking about them. So I would say its just a great sports town period.

super article, especially the comment about pops shoving nickels into times square peep shows and "frankie" francesa being a fat tub.
you make a good case here for the present day football fan,and would probably hold water if college football was more of a local favorite.
